Get Pampered at Your Community College Salon

Did you know Madison Area Technology College has a salon? It's been open since 1963 and
offers amazing services! Jason's aunt, Mrs. B (as she is affectionately called), has worked there for years and always encouraged me to go. I truly enjoyed my visits to Cameo Spa Salon and wasn't ready to give that place up, even to save money. But that was before I quit my job to stay home with c and my budget started to shrink.

I went for the first time a year ago for highlights and have been going ever since. I had no idea it was an actual salon. A few years ago I went to a cosmetology college to get a facial from my friend, Joanna, and was in a huge, loud room with several other women. It wasn't a tranquil experience but it was cheap and I was supporting my friend. MATC Salon isn't like this at all--it's an actual salon (see photo below) with a relaxing atmosphere. Although unlike a 'normal' salon the stylists are students who are practicing their skills. If this sounds scary to you don't fret--the instructors are constantly walking around and will stop by often to answer the students' questions. And in case you didn't bring any magazines, you can amuse yourself while watching the students braid mannequin hair. It's hilarious!

All salon services are guaranteed. If you are not satisfied simply notify the salon manager within five days and the service will be corrected or re-done. No refunds will be given.

I can't write this post without telling you there have been a couple times when I haven't completely loved my hair. But as with anything in life, you get what you pay for, and unless they shave all my hair off anything can be fixed. I just give them guidance and let them have fun!
By law the students are not allowed to receive tips. But if you want to show your appreciation, and I encourage you to do so, you can give money that will go in a pool to cover the cost of their board exams.

In addition to salon services they also sell RUSK products at cost. I buy shampoo and conditioner for approx $10!

The downside? It usually takes 3 hours to get highlights. And the appointment times are not convenient for everyone--there's a 4 hour window Monday-Friday.

Here's a snapshot of how cheap the services are:

    Haircut with shampoo......................................$7
Haircut with chemical service over $15.........FREE
    Semi-Permanent color....................................$23 and up
    Full Foil Highlighting........................................$35 and up
    Manicure.......................................................... $10
    Pedicure...........................................................$20

  1. My haircuts take twice as long as at another salon, but with parking it's $10. I've been really happy with the MATC Salon!

  2. Thanks for the comment wrenb. Did you have to pay $10 to park downtown? It's usually only $2-3 when I have gone.
